When I sat back and considered what type of window dressing I wanted for my newly decorated living room, I decided that I needed to be logical and not let my heart rule my head – so many times I think of wonderful ways to up-date my home, only to find out that my dreams are dashed as the things I choose aren’t practical and don’t really give me what I’d imagined!

Making a list is said to be the best way to consider all aspects of what you’d like and what you need; there’s a distinct difference between the two, or so I thought. So with pen in hand I mused and pondered and came up with a ‘wish list’. The window dressing had to be practical, functional, stylish and affordable..oh and I also needed privacy as I’m sick and tired of people staring at me – it makes me feel like a goldfish in a bowl and sometimes I just can’t resist the temptation to wave, that soon sends them scurrying off!

I also read that blinds, vertical and Venetian styles in particular, had been proven to reduce the risk of being burgled; apparently because the thieves can’t see inside your rooms they can’t tell if anyone’s home or not, they are also unable to see what quick sale (on the black market) items you have, so they tend to move on and find another poor unsuspecting household. So that’s another positive added to my ‘wish list’.

Colour, that’s also important, I want something modern but not too garish or gaudy. Natural materials, to help ease my carbon footprint conscious a little would also be nice. With my ‘wish list’ growing longer I began wondering if I should start crossing things off, surely no window dressing would make my ‘wish list’ come true. How wrong can you be?

I discovered that dreams can come true if you choose blinds as your window dressing. I decided that blinds would tick off everything on my ‘wish list’, surely there must be a snag, I asked myself. But no, with the fabulous range of blinds available you can select the style, colour and design you want for any given room in your home.

I settled for a the most gorgeous wooden blinds in a natural colour tone that compliment my furniture beautifully. They provide me with much needed privacy, although I can see out nobody can see in! My other half is quietly pleased about the security aspect, and with easy wand controls the slats can be tilted to create different diffused lighting effects (now that wasn’t on my wish list), as well as being able to close the slats completely at night. There was also the added bonus of being to pull the wooden blinds to the top of the window if I wished to give me an unobstructed view outside, and of course it means I can clean the windows easily.

If a plugged downspout cannot be cleared with a hose then make use of a small plumber’s snake or even an unbent clothes hanger. Again, remember to be gentle.

6. Alternatively, use a leaf blower to clean the gutters; however, remember that you’ll be high up, often in awkward postures, and carrying a good-sized machine that not only is awkward to use but also can blind you with dust.

7. Further, you can use the hose for flushing the gutters with water after cleaning. (At this time, you can also find out if there are any leaks in the gutter or in the downspout.)

Some Tips For Downspout Cleaning -

Firstly, one can use the hose of the pipe and spray it forcefully at an angle less than 40* in the gutter for forcefully pushing the twigs and leaves towards any corner where one can use a trowel or hands to take it out with. That is much more convenient! But before doing this, make sure that the gutter spouts are not clogged, as water needs to go down there otherwise it will fill up the gutter. Secondly, remember to be especially careful when using a hose or a plumber’s snake for unclogging the down spouts. It is likely that the clog has caused the gutter to rust, making it more likely that you will punch a hole in the gutter.

Downspout Overflow Causes Problems

Improper spouting and discharge lines are responsible for about one half of basement water problems. It is very important to have sufficient and properly located and functioning gutters and downspout lines on your home.

Look for the following most common downspout situations: downspouts too close to the roof, clogged downspouts, missing downspouts. If you see water overflowing from your gutters or downspouts and have already checked to be sure they are not clogged, then you either have a problem with the discharge drain line or an inadequate downspout, which is too narrow to carry the water in a heavy rain. In this case, you will want to install a larger diameter downspout.

If your downspout is not clogged then the problem is in the drain line which is probably blocked. Downspout discharge lines should be at least 10 feet from the nearest wall with a down slope dropping away from the structure. Insert a garden hose in the drain line to see if the water comes out somewhere away from the house. Buried drains lines are usually only 10″ to 12″ below ground. You can insert a hose into the point where the downspouts enter the ground and turn it on.

If the water backs up and overflows, you know that is the problem. Look for the wet area near the curb or on your property down hill from the house. You may be able to go to the discharge point at a curb of lower elevation from your home where the discharge line comes out and clear the opening of any derbies.
